Cyndi's List - a great free genealogy site that is a compendium of other sites (not all free)
But definitely a good starting point for research of genealogy
This site has been around since the internet was first created I think. I remember it fondly because 24 years ago it helped me solve a mystery I am still trying to bring to a head, which is where did my first ancestor arrive in the US. It provided me a ships log of the McKartie which sailed from England to Maine which showed my potential ancestors were passengers in the late 1600s. This ships log I am sure now is on Ancestory.com and is hidden behind a pay wall. Which all good genealogical information should be since it has no real benefit to current humankind and if left to the masses could cause real harm to humanity.
The site is Cyndi’s list and no it is not a place you go to find good craftsman and reviews but it is a great free resource for the genealogist.

It is a compendium of all the known genealogical sites paid or unpaid put together by topic or country. I hope it proves useful to all of you out there trying to find your roots out there!
